The market research institute Canalys released its latest global smartphone shipment report for the first quarter of 2022.

In the first three months (January-March), Canalys research showed Samsung as the top mobile phone vendor, aka the company that shipped the most smartphones worldwide, with a market share of 24 percent.

This figure is an increase from the 22 percent market share achieved by the South Korean company in the first quarter of 2021 (Year-over-Year).

According to Canalys, the increase in Samsung’s business performance was contributed by the trio of Galaxy S22 Series and a number of Galaxy A Series models that are selling well in the market.

Following Samsung, Apple occupies the second position with a market share of 18 percent, also increasing from the 15 percent market share achieved in the same period last year. Canalys said the increase in shipments of Apple phones was contributed by sales of the iPhone SE 2022, as well as the iPhone 13 Series which was claimed to be quite good.

On the other hand, if the market share of Samsung and Apple increases, the market share of mobile phone vendors in the third, fourth, and fifth positions, namely Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo, actually declines in the first quarter of 2022. The three mobile phone vendors each have a market share of 13 percent (Xiaomi), 10 percent (Oppo), and 8 percent (Vivo), a decrease from the previous year which were respectively 14 percent (Xiaomi), 11 percent (Oppo), and 10 percent (Vivo)

Overall, Canalys also claims that total global mobile phone shipments in the first quarter of 2022 decreased by 11 percent compared to the same period last year. According to Canalys, this was caused by a number of factors, ranging from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, China’s lockdown policy, and inflation that hit the global economy.

Canalys itself did not mention how many smartphones were shipped globally in the first quarter of 2022. However, they predict that future phone shipments will not have the same fate as the period earlier this year. This is because the shortage of semiconductor products that hit the global market is said to be recovering in the near future. Apart from that, take a look at the list of the five best-selling mobile phone vendors in the world in the first quarter of 2022 according to Canalys’ version, as summarized by KompasTekno from Canalys.com, Wednesday (20/4/2022).
